Artist Statement:

“The Part Raven aesthetic is basically a mishmash of whatever imprinted itself on my brain as a kid.

In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, for me, that meant everything from TV like Looney Tunes and Hilarious House of Frightenstein, to classic album art and the image some of those bands had. I got into rock’n’roll early, and at five years old was singing along to anthems about boozing and women, loving it, if not exactly understanding it yet.

Mad Magazine, mainstream and underground comics, graffiti and skateboard art were important too. Airbrushed vans and poorly executed tattoos.

From the start, I spent most of my time alone, more observer than participant. I learned early that the sacred cows we’re supposed to revere were often, at best, hollow promises and that the folks advocating for them - teachers, cops, the church, politicians, family – were frequently hypocrites and bullshitters. I’ve always considered it liberating, not a lament, to not feel I belong to anything.

A huge impression was made on me, at perhaps a weirdly young age, by the depiction of strong, smart, sexy women who were superheroic, or supernatural. Think Julie Newmar and Yvonne Craig, respectively, as Catwoman and Batgirl on the camp ‘60s Batman show, or Elvira, and Carolyn Jones as Morticia Addams.

When, on the cusp of my teens, I saw Joan Jett on the cover of her Bad Reputation album, tight black leather and smeared makeup, all rock’n’roll rumble, it sort of brought everything together for me.

Soon enough, fun with hallucinogens completed the picture, and that’s basically the lens I’ve seen the world through ever since!”
